Next Saturday,the 21st, Resurrection Young Adults will be heading to KCK to work at Hillcrest Transitional Housing.  We’ll be working on a new facility that the organization will be opening up soon. We’ll also have lunch and get to know some of the homeless families that work with the organization.  Hillcrest’s mission is this: ”to be a transitional housing program providing a Christian environment that helps homeless families become self-supportive, self reliant contributors to society.”

Proverbs 14:31 says this, “…whoever is kind to the needy honors God.”  I think this will be a great opportunity to show our Christian Faith and kindness in a practical way.

I was blessed to work with Hillcrest a couple of months ago and had an awesome experience.  If you’re a young adult, I would encourage you to come out next weekend and serve others.  It’s also a great opportunity to meet other young adults.  If you’re planning on coming out, just send me an email (nathan.webb@cor.org  or Facebook message and let me know.  We’ll be working with FaithWork on this project and meeting at 9am in the Narthex of Resurrection.  I’m looking forward to serving with you!

It’s been a busy 5 weeks in Young Adult Ministry as I’ve been meeting as many people as possible, making summer plans, and trying to develop the vision for the ministry.  All the busyness has been well worth it, as I’ve been able to meet dozens of young adults who are both eager to get connected and to help out.  I feel like the first 5 weeks were spent getting ready to dive in, and on Sunday I just went for it…right off the deep end.  I have to admit, it was nice to get things going…

We kicked off the summer study of Donald Miller’s Blue Like Jazz on Sunday night.  The turn out was great and the discussions were awesome.  If you couldn’t make it last week, I would love to have you come check it out this Sunday or any other time!

I’ll leave you with a quote from Miller’s book that we discussed on Sunday night.  It really got me thinking about my own spiritual journey and how I’ve come to be a follower of Christ:

“I never liked jazz music because jazz music doesn’t resolve.  But I was outside the Bagdad Theater in Portland one night when I saw a man playing the saxaphone.  I stood there for fifteen minutes, and he never opened his eyes. 

After that I liked jazz music. 

Sometimes you have to watch somebody love something before you can love it yourself.  It is as if they are showing you the way. 

I used to not like God because God didn’t resolve.  But that was before any of this happened” (ix)

Okay, I know what you’re probably thinking.  Who is a “young adult” and do I still qualify? Why is somebody blogging about this, anyway?  Let’s try to answer a few of these questions…

First off, my name is Nathan Webb and I’m the Minister to Young Adults at The United Methodist Church of the Resurrection in the greater Kansas City Area.  I’ll be the primary blogger for this page, but I invite you to join in on the conversation…it’s way more fun when I’m not just talking to myself.

Alright, to the perceived questions.  First of all, who is a young adult?  I know that “young” is a pretty relative term, so I thought I’d help you out.  The ministry to young adults at Resurrection is designed for those post college age to early thirties.  So, if you fall in that life stage category, then yes, you do qualify.

Question two.  Why blog about this?  Resurrection is a big church with a lot of young adults.  It’s my job (and passion) to connect young adults with each other and to God, so the blog world is a great place to tell you where and how to get connected.  The blog will give you information on what’s going on in Young Adult Ministry and provide an easy place to talk about faith.
